Future Home Of “The Therapist’s Desk”

The therapy office has few boundaries for clients with exception of the “Therapist’s desk”. Liability reasons dictate to maintain HIPAA compliance for any potential breach of PHI (although all PHI is handled according to HIPAA standards *see Privacy Policy in Orientation Packet). Clinical reasons recommends sharing a space with your client to foster connection and a working relationship. Nothing can be more dissuading than an “expert” behind the desk’s divisive boundary, postured authoritatively in his chair framed perfectly in foreground his collegiate degrees as wards to any debate. Functionally and practically its simply more comfortable and easier to converse without all the fanfare and distracting disarray of obstructions. None the less, when session ends, it is a space for the therapist to sit like a craftsman at his workbench, to take raw materials, technical tools, knowledge and wisdom, and under immense pressure and fire, forge something that is profitable for future work. Its where he makes his living and pays the bills. As demonstrated in this colorfully witty example above, I invite my clients and future clients to share this space with me to gain more insight into the work of a therapist that continues when clients go home. An idea in progress, this blog will be a creative and informational outlet of sharing more information about the mind of therapist on topics that client’s may share an interests. Subcategories that are in the works are :

  • “Distractedly Focused: Notes on ADHD”

  • “Relatable, But not to Me: Spectrums of Autism”

  • “Dictatorship to Democracy: Family Connections”

  • “Is it Tea or Coffee?: Reflections Between Sessions”

  • “Margin Notes: What I learned from them”.

Thank you for sharing your time with me here. Looking forward to connecting with all of you from, “The Therapist’s Desk”.
